About Sarah Carter

Counseling Experience and Training

I received my master’s degree in social work in 2000 from the University of Maryland School of Social Work, and I became a licensed clinical social worker in 2003.  My family and I have lived in Charlottesville since 2009.

I have advanced training and counseling experience in perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (e.g. post-partum depression and anxiety), trauma, attachment, and early childhood mental health.

Counseling Philosophy

I use a variety of counseling methods to meet the individual needs of my clients.  The counseling methods that I use include but are not limited to: cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness, interpersonal psychotherapy, DBT, solution focused brief therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, psychodynamic therapy, and family systems therapy.

My approach to counseling is collaborative and strengths-based.  My goal is to help clients:
        find greater self-definition;
        achieve insight about the patterns that cause them to stay “stuck”;
        develop knowledge, skills and strength to address current challenges; and
        find a more meaningful and satisfying path in life.

Client confidentiality is of the utmost importance to me, and my counseling services are provided in an accepting, supportive, and relaxed environment.
